Districts

Centro
The blocks around the Mercado Central, Plaza de los Luceros and the Explanada. The Postiguet beach, the tram and daily shops are within ten minutes. It is crowded in summer, and the bars near the Rambla run late.
Benalúa
A residential grid behind the railway station with its own square and market. Calmer and cheaper than the center; the sea is a walk along the port.
Santa Cruz and San Roque
White houses on the slope under the Santa Bárbara castle. Pretty and quiet, and all stairs: with a stroller or a bad knee every trip out is a climb.
Playa de San Juan
Wide avenues, apartment complexes with pools and several kilometers of beach. The tram runs to the center, yet from many buildings the nearest supermarket is a drive.

The center sits between the port and two hills with castles on them, and a separate beach district, Playa de San Juan, lies about seven kilometers to the north-east at the end of a tram line. Deciding where to live in Alicante mostly means choosing between those two.

Lists of the best neighborhoods in Alicante split along that line. In the center everything is on foot, the beach included. San Juan has more sea and less city, and in winter part of its restaurants close and many apartments stand empty.

Is Alicante a good place to live? For people who want a small coastal city with an airport close by and mild winters, it works well. A beach within a walk adds to the parks category of the score: the Postiguet does that for the center, the whole shoreline for San Juan. The other categories pull the two apart, so read the minutes to a grocery, a school and a health center.

The Benacantil and Tossal hills stand inside the city. A street that points straight at the sea on the map can end at a slope, and the climb is counted in the walking minutes.
