Districts
- Vakhitovsky
- The historic center, from the Kremlin along pedestrian Bauman Street to the university quarter. Cafes, culture and services are close together, the streets climb and drop between the hill and the shore of Lake Kaban, and large food shops are fewer than in the residential districts.
- Privolzhsky
- A large southern district that mixes Soviet-era housing estates, newer buildings and industrial land. The estates have schools, clinics and shops among the buildings, and the metro reaches part of the district.
The Kazan districts are administrative units, and each is too varied to judge as a whole. In Vakhitovsky the difference is between the upper streets near the university and the lower ones by the lake and the railway station. In Privolzhsky it is between the housing estates and the industrial zones next to them, where a main road or a factory fence can add many minutes to a walk.
With one metro line, buses and trams do much of the work. If you live without a car, look at which stops are within reach of the door and what lies between you and them. For a family, the courtyard and the walk to school matter more than the distance to the center.
