Districts
- Tsentralny
- The right-bank center along Krasny Prospekt, with the opera house, Central Park and both metro lines. Most errands are a short walk. The main avenue is loud and courtyards are small.
- Leninsky
- The busiest part of the left bank sits around Ploshchad Marksa, where the metro arrives after crossing the river on its covered bridge. Further out come housing estates, private houses and industrial land, and the metro is a bus ride away.
- Akademgorodok
- The science town about thirty kilometers south, built in a pine forest near the Ob reservoir. Institutes, the university, shops and a beach are within a walk of each other. The city center is a long ride by bus or suburban train.
The cold decides the rest: a walk that is pleasant in September is a different thing at minus twenty-five. Any district here is too large to judge as one place. In Leninsky a building at Ploshchad Marksa and a building on a far estate share a name and little else. On the right bank the Trans-Siberian main line runs along the river and cuts many blocks off from the embankment, so check where the nearest crossing is.
In the report, read the minutes to the nearest grocery, stop and school before you read the total. The older-person and family profiles slow the pace, which is closer to how a winter walk feels. If your work is in Akademgorodok and the apartment is in the center, add the institute as one of your own places: there is no metro between them, and the report will say so.
